I don't think the suggestion of /dev/null'ing the cron job is the best
idea, since you will need to know some information your are /dev/null'ing
in the event of an outage. As a network/sysadmin maintaining control of
your mailbox should be the focus of your attention, not stopping MRTG from
notifying you of problems. If there are as many ports as you insinuate, I
must assume that it is your job to keep stats on the ports and not just a
"nice thing" on a home network.

I suggest researching procmail filters to delete messages that you deem
unimportant. An addition to that is when there is more than one
network/system admin, the things that you will want reported to you might
not match what someone else would like to see.

I hope that didn't come across as harsh. I just think you are focusing on
the wrong problem.
