Hi friends!
The MRTG for my router traffic shows high spikes, but in fact there is no such
traffic flow really.

This happens mostly when my MRTG server loses connectivity to the router. And
when the connectivity is restored, it shows a high spike.

I had gone through the mailing list, but there was no solution present.
Different people explain in a different way. People say it is a normal
operation, as the software tries to calculate the traffic during the outage
period and hence a spike is displayed. Some say about 32 bit / 64 bit counters
overflow. If anyone can explain me clearly, it will be really helpful for me.
Or else is this a problem with the MRTG version? I am using mrtg-2.9.17-1.

I am using MRTG to monitor the router's CPU. If there is a spike due to the
software's miscalculation, then it is a problem for me. ( say the graph states
95% utilization, and I get confused whether the router has really reached, or
the software has interpreted values during the outage period ).

Please share your views in this regard..

Thanks,
Arun Kumar
