It would be nice to be able to take the probes of smokeping and use MRTG,
that way one could use routers2, 14all etc etc

Right, smokeping has a curl probe. That's another approach. Depending on how
comfortable Dave is with scripting, that may or may not be quicker--it would
be another program to support.
