Hello, how many forks do you use? If you have 256MB RAM, that this is not enough. 1GB or more is good. Your system MUST NOT use swap. If you haven't much RAM, you can't run much forks of MRTG. Other problem is disk speed. You need very fast harddrive. Ultra320 SCSI harddrive 15000RPM is very good. Processor speed is not too critical.
Look at mailing list history. There was some discussions from me and others. Specially look at mail from Tomas Zeman 28.1.2005 with subject "Using MRTG in BIG setup". In newer MRTG 2.10.x works great "dead host detection". Look at change log for exact version. Dead hosts are other big slowdown for mrtg. In my setup (Linux 2.6.10, 2x Intel Xeon2.40GHz, 3GB Ram) system gets about 1.8GB for kernel harddrive caches. I have about 9000 targets. When everything is allright, system gets all targets for about 30 second. Next 20 seconds gets flushing caches to harddrive.
