Hi,

you can get a lot of information from an SNMP Agent installed on the system.

SMTP: All the information needed is in the MTA MIB. If no MTA MIB available: 
See solution for POP3.

POP3: If the agent is net-snmp (mainly all free OS) there is a little 
documentet feature inthe confuguration: logMatch. Very easy to configure. 
This counts numbers of regexp in a logfile.I use it to could queued mail, 
rejected mail, SPAM,...

Just look through the features of the SNMP agent. It can provide you with a 
LOT of information.
