Some ways to smooth peaks are the "logscale" and "secondmean" options.

If I understand you correctly however you want to avoid the too-high value in 
your graph completely. To achieve this changing the maxbytes value is the only 
way to go. If you know for sure the maxbytes value will never be reached it is 
an option to lower the MaxBytes value in your config file. Be aware that this 
will make the percentage figures below the graphs useless (in case you have the 
percentage displayed).

Hello list,

I use mrtg with tap-devices, normally no problem, but when a hicup occurs 
somewhere it gets wrong data from snmpd. The result of this is that the graph 
is scaled down because of an enormous peak. I use "MaxBytes" but is there 
another option to smooth these peaks?
