IMHO a lighter shade of black is still black... but maybe you can convince your boss that you changed the background to the lightest shade of black and leave the pages as the are ;-)
An other option is to find a colour scheme for the graphs that suit the eyes of your boss. You can try a combination of orange, grey and red in stead of the standard green, pink and blue.
