Here are my thoughts for your questions: 1- You should try to collect SNMP information as close as possible to your network core, to avoid network traffic and extra WAN bandwidth utilization. That means: I'd go for a monitoring on your core router (assuming they both have enough memory and CPU resources). The graph you get should be the same on both sides of the link you're collecting info, the differences is that input-A should be equal to output-B and output-A should be equal to input-B. 2- No, you don't monitor interfaces status. Maybe even you can do this with a true/false statement (as long as we have OID for interface status), but you'd take at least 5 mins to discover it, and that's an eternity when it comes to network availability. Believe me, you don't want to discover the link is down by the complaint of users... Maybe, for this, you'd like to meet Nagios. :-) it's kind of nice and freeware. Here is my setup. I have a core router that has 6 t-1 connections to my remote sites. Where will I get the most accurate monitoring from the core looking at all interfaces or the remote side router? Second I was testing one of my sites that is connected, but no one is on it yet, and I send a large number of pings. I then disconnected the T-1 and the only thing that I noticed monitoring the core router was the traffic dropped. I could not tell the interface was down.
