Have you run perldoc bbmrtg.pl?  The pod on that module is very good.
In short, you have to add configuration items to the mrtg cfg file that
tell bbmrtg what the bb-host name is for a particular target, what test
it is associated with, and what thresholds are associated with red,
yellow, and green.

No.  That's the point - I can't run the bbclient (or hobbitclient) on a
router or a UPS.  So, I collect the information using mrtg and drop it
into Hobbit, complete with threshold information, so that hobbit can do
the paging, acknowledgments, and all of the other things that it is
really good at.

Using mrtg/bbmrtg to monitor servers would be a little silly - the
client would work much better for that function.

Yes, bbmrtg.pl needs access to the .rrd or .log files, as well as the
mrtg config.  There is no specific requirement that the mrtg poller and
the hobbit/bbnet box be the same.

No, bbmrtg.pl can read either rrd or rateup-style logs.
