If you want ot add your own extended directives to the MRTG .cfg files, the official way to do it is to use a prefix of <your-application-name>*. So, for example, the routers2 package uses new directives like:
routers.cgi*Graph[xxxx]: yyyyyyy routers.cgi*Options[xxxx]: yyyyy routers.cgi*Icon: xxxxxxx and so on. If a directive contains an asterisk (*) then MRTG assumes it is a extension and ignores it rather than giving an error. Of course, you will need to write your own application that handles these new additions.
