Did you remember to have the 'RunAsDaemon: yes' in the MRTG cfg file so that 
MRTG does not exit?

I tried to install the MRTG as a service, I strictly followed the steps in the 
documentation but when I tried to run the MRTG under Administrative tools -> 
Services, I got the following:
"The MRTG service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop 
automitically if they have no work to do. For example performance logs and 
alerts service.
