Hi Edward,

Well, each broadband router can be different, but the basic steps are:

1. Ensure your broadband router has SNMP turned on and that you know the
"community" name (usually "public")

2. Have a web server installed and running on the PC/Server that will run
MRTG.

3. Make sure you have Perl installed (if you're using a Microsoft Windows
based PC/Server, then ActiveState Perl<http://www.activestate.com/activeperl>
is a good start)

4. Make sure that you have MRTG installed (the official MRTG
instructions<http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/doc/index.en.html> are a good place to
start)

5. Use the MRTG script
"cfgmaker<http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/doc/cfgmaker.en.html>" to scan your
broadband router for its network ports. Most likely, it will have at least two,
one for broadband and one for your internal network. (Note: if it has an
on-board multiport switch, this may appear as multiple ports, or [as in the
case of my Netgear router!] a single port.
You'll want to point the output at a folder that is being served up by your
webserver.

6. You may like to use the MRTG script
"indexmaker<http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/doc/indexmaker.en.html>" to make a
pretty index page of the ports that you're monitoring.

7. Run MRTG<http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/doc/mrtg.en.html> manually a couple
of times to make sure there are no errors. Don't forget to check that you can
get to the pages on your website.

8. Run MRTG as a service/daemon. Refer to the MRTG
docs<http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/doc/index.en.html> on the best way to do this
for your PC/Server (unix is easy, Windows requires a little effort)

9. You're done.

Note: if the PC/Server that is running MRTG goes down, then you'll end up with
blanks/straight lines in your graphs. Also watch out for routers that lose
their SNMP settings when they are rebooted (like mine Netgear, grrrr)

Any other issues, read the great online documentation and if you're still
stuck, post to this mailing list.

IP address range and 1 IP gateway ) ?

Hello Craig,

I want to measure the total traffic...
So, how to point MRTG at ADSL machine and ensure it picks up the port carrying
the broadband traffic ?

Thanks !

Edward.

Hi Edward,

If you're wanting to measure your total traffic, then just point MRTG at your
broadband router and ensure it picks up the port carrying the broadband traffic.

If you're wanting to measure the traffic per IP, then you'll need some other
tool (like ntop say) which looks at individual IPs.

Hope that helps.

Craig
