If you are using MRTG with RRDTool and the Routers2 frontend, then 'unknown' 
values default to being shown as a greyout.  You can use the options 
'unknasprev' to make unknowns show as the previous value (as in native MRTG), 
or 'unknaszero' to display unknowns as zero.

Otherwise, in Native MRTG, mrtg-rrd and 14all, you can use 'unknaszero' to make 
unknowns display as zero, instead of the default behaviour (displaying as the 
last known previous value).

There is now way to make the unknowns display as previous value in a different 
colour as you ask, without making your own RRDTool command line to generate the 
graph image.
