Sounds like a corruption problem. Create a new empty database and import
all the objects from the old one. Compact the database and then see if it
still insists on using high numbers.

I had this db given to me. I exported it to Excel and added some more
records. The ID field(autonumber) went from 1 to 2890.
I then created a new db with this data. When I added a record it
numbered it 45679876. The next record was numbered 45679877. So why is
it adding numbers in this range? Is there a way to continue from 2890?

Long integers can grow a lot bigger that 10,000. Otherwise they
would not make good UID's.
