Thank you for responding. I am printing out your response so I can 
study it and I kind of understand. I do have more than 4 possible 
approvals (actually 6) and I am being stubborn. Everything works 
just fine as long as I use actual names in my tables, but it's when 
I try to use ID numbers for those names and then "convert" them back 
to names for reports that I run into problems.

I am doing this database for the quality dept. of a local company. 
(I am self taught and they don't pay me much, but I love to solve 
problems.) Whenever a change is made to a document, we track that by 
giving it a unique "change" number and a description, etc. It is 
then routed to at least one or more people for approval. Since we 
have a lot of these, I didn't want to keep storing all that text in 
the database.

I understand the basics of queries and relationships, but get lost 
when it starts getting complex. However, I appreciate your response!
