Visual Basic 6.0 and ADO is how I've done it in the past. The MDB will contain 
just the tables.
 
Many off the shelf commercial software programs use Access as a back end. UPS 
World Ship is one of them. 
 
As far as tutorials, I've always used the Getwen & Lentz Access Programming 
books.
