thanks for clearing up the terminology. What do you call it when the file is such that when I try to open it in musescore I get a popup saying: "Cannot read file … bad format"? That is what I was seeing. And yes, you are right. There was a “<" missing in the xml file. It is no doubt my fault. I undoubtedly deleted when I was looking at the file with my editor.
