Hi Marc,

This proposal is meant to benefit users of both the internal and external
synthesizers. Let me describe the two particular purposes I would want it
for, since that may clarify where I'm coming from.

I often use the SSO sounds, and they work fine in Zerberus. But it's a bit
of a pain to use them. Every time I start a new score, I first have to open
up the Synthesizer window and load all the sounds I'm going to be using, one
at a time. Then I have to open up the Mixer window and assign sounds to
instruments, one at a time. For an orchestral score, this takes a few
minutes. It's not that big a deal, but it's a bit tedious. I'd really like
the process to be automated: just specify one configuration file, and all
the sounds get set up correctly by default.

Also, SSO has a slightly different list of articulations than the built in
one. There are no tremolo sounds, but it does have staccato sounds for many
instruments. So for the strings, I load the staccato sounds into the
tremolo channel, which works fine but is a bit of a hack. For the brass
it's more of a problem: MuseScore just doesn't accept that brass instruments
can have multiple articulations.

My second use case is an external synthesizer. I own GPO5, and I'd really
like to be able to use it with MuseScore. I can use JACK to get them
talking to each other, but the wrong commands are being sent. For most
non-percussion sounds, GPO uses a controller instead of velocity to control
dynamics. There's simply no way to get MuseScore to send the right commands
to make it play correctly. As a result, I'm in the 99% of users who only
uses the internal synthesizers, but not by choice! I *would* use an
external synthesizer if that option were better supported. I suspect the
same is true for a lot of other people.

Peter
