That's LINUX GUI is very sensitive to combined quality of VGAcard & its drivers. Also kernel has to be properly configured & build - with activated DRI & MTRR, proper DMA, deactivated PAT [very-very evil feature],... Also, there can be [on systems with non-locked cooler RPMs - PWM, SmartFan,..] issues with CPU & chipset cooling [may cause overheats] unless LMSENSORS/KSENSORS/PWMCONFIG packages are installed & properly tuned so that to control RPM & chip temperatures.
