And me think that we can reenter through another entrance - via out-of-distro install-time-built packaging (but packaged as the standards dictate). Me only need a short record "version x.x.x" in "git log" once a new version is issued. Otherwise less informative (and sometimes incomplete & difficult to automatize ) "VERSION.TXT" will have to be used.
