The latest desktop environments are a total joke - absolute rubbish! Massive CPU and memory hog simply to start up. Most require 3D graphics cards just so the UI is able to keep up!! After Ubuntu dropped Gnome 2, I switched to FreeBSD and JWM (Joe's Window Manager). No "desktop environment" it sight, just a window manager and a menu system I can very quickly edit. Just the way I like it. Been on this environment for 4 years now and can't be happier.
