Thanks for confirming that Win2000 is still supported.

I read multiple articles related to the problem. None seem to be
specific to my VM environment, but then I started looking at the running
Services. One by one I shut down what I thought I don't need. Between
every stopped service I tried to run the mseide.exe. Eventually I found
that if I stopped the "Team Viewer 8" service (which I needed for a
client 2 years ago), then magically MSEide started working again. I am
still not the wiser as to why, but hey... ;-)

Go figure! The joys of MS Windows. :-/

At least now my primary Windows development environment is back and
working again.
