I must confess, upgrading the base OS is extremely simple and very
reliable. The benefit here is that FreeBSD is not just the kernel (like
Linux), so the rest of the base OS is very well tested and integrated
too. I've upgraded my workstation since FreeBSD 9.0 with every release
up 'till 10.1 - no problems.

It's the ports and binary packages that is more of an issue for me. But
according to the support forum, it is because of my lack of
understanding the ports system. They have a point, I never read the docs
in much detail. ;-) Apparently you need to update all ports or binary
packages you installed at the same time - when you do an update. Over
the four years I've only selectively upgraded a library here, an
application there etc. That causes version mismatches and what is the
primary cause of breaking the build process of ports. It makes sense if
you think about it. So now I'm upgrading every ports or binary package
that I installed after the base OS. This is going surprisingly easy, and
the more user libraries I update the more reliable application updates
become. So far I'm very impressed.

My VM servers are all still sitting on stock FreeBSD 9.0. Much less user
installed applications or services, so hopefully that should be even
easier to upgrade.
