In objecteditor only textfields are listed in selection because they are necessary for 'dropdown.optionsdb odb_directdata' mode. Without 'odb_directdata' it is possible to use other fieldtypes too, simply type the field name and press enter. In directdata mode the dataset will not be scrolled by scrolling the dropdown list.
