This is actually a more complex question than you might assume at first.

First – with regard to placement of System Center databases into “shared” SQL
offerings:

· The sizing guide (sizer spreadsheet) always ASSUMES that the SQL
instance will be dedicated to the specific databases. In some cases, like
>3000 databases, we even spec two independent, dedicated servers, with
dedicated instances. This is done to ensure there is enough I/O (memory, CPU,
disk, etc..) on a per-instance basis. So the answer to the question is that
“Microsoft always sizes based on the assumption of a dedicated instance and
server”

· That said – while I generally don’t recommend shared SQL instances
for larger production deployments for OpsMgr databases, I have seen them work
and be successful. You must ensure there is plenty of available memory for the
OpsMgr databases, disk I/O, CPU, etc… When sharing multiple large, highly
transactional DB’s in a single instance, this gets more difficult to ensure.

· The last warning about multiple node, multiple instance clusters, is
that you need to monitor and ensure you don’t get “instance stacking” where
multiple clustered instances end up on a single node, and compete for precious
resources. After maintenance, we would commonly see customers call in with
performance issues, then investigate to find all three active SQL instances on
a 4-node cluster, running on a single node, with three other nodes idle.

Second – with regard to the reporting server:

· We don’t recommend a shared SSRS server, and I am pretty sure we
don’t support a multiple instance SSRS server. We make significant changes to
the security in SSRS and this will break other applications leveraging SSRS.

Subject: [msmom] SCOM 2012 SQL Questions

This is for a brand new SCOM install.

First for the SQL DB I am looking to put it on our 4 node cluster. Is it
recommended that it be a separate instance does it matter, any pros cons?

Second for the reporting server can it be installed on an existing reporting
server if so any concerns or pros cons?

Thanks in advance
