Few things -

1. You are running SQL 2012 SP3. This is not supported for SCOM 2012 SP1. I
don't know of a blocking issue for upgrade - but that has never been tested
either, since it is an unsupported configuration. It is critical to not
upgrade SQL server patch levels until the applications support them.
SQL 2012 SP3 is supported for SCOM 2012 R2, however. I doubt this is related
to your issue - just point that out.

2. You shouldn't stop all the other management servers to upgrade the first
management server? That will cause all your resource pools to fail and agents
to fail over to the only one standing - overwhelming it.

3. Error 1603 is a generic error code. It doesn't tell you anything. However
- it does appear we are finding a previously installed agent on this machine
(add/remove programs is irrelevant). 786970C5-E6F6-4A41-B238-AE25D4B91EEA was
found.

Check the SCOM registry - is there an agent management groups as well as server
management groups key?

You can also try MsiExec.exe /X{786970C5-E6F6-4A41-B238-AE25D4B91EEA}, but I
strongly recommend a call to Microsoft support. They can typically knock these
out pretty quickly.

Subject: [msmom] SCOM SP1 to R2 Upgrade - return code: 1603

Hi

I started our R2 Upgrade this morning.

Orchestrator has upgraded fine, SCOM has a problem.
It rolled back so we're up and running again on SP1, but I'm looking for some
assistance please.

I went through each of the pre-reqs
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249704(v=sc.12).aspx<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3a%2f%2ftechnet.microsoft.com%2fen-us%2flibrary%2fdn249704(v%3dsc.12).aspx&data=01%7c01%7cjopupill%40064d.mgd.microsoft.com%7c53258e9134cb4d935df408d383d1d445%7c72f988bf86f141af91ab2d7cd011db47%7c1&sdata=zm5fAw7ZTEltA%2bEE9P8tFqxK7MDdY6CuzQdCGnZk%2bYY%3d>

I have 5 management servers, I stopped the services on 4 of them and started
the upgrade on the main management server.
I got this error
http://syscomlab.blog.com/2014/09/scom-2012-r2-on-windows-server-2008-r2-failed-omserver-msi-returned-error-1603/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3a%2f%2fsyscomlab.blog.com%2f2014%2f09%2fscom-2012-r2-on-windows-server-2008-r2-failed-omserver-msi-returned-error-1603%2f&data=01%7c01%7cjopupill%40064d.mgd.microsoft.com%7c53258e9134cb4d935df408d383d1d445%7c72f988bf86f141af91ab2d7cd011db47%7c1&sdata=%2bfLjziUXxMVMO2hmL0gbIVPUztXp904sLpjZ8b%2b1Gh0%3d>

The management server OS is 2012 R2, it comes with dotnet3.5 SP1 installed.
I've tried installing it anyway, it won't install.

I've attached the setuplog.
On line 1625
[12:00:52]: Error:  Failed, return code: 1603

However the SCOM Agent isn't installed.
I'm not sure if it's referring to the SP1 Version of the management server, but
I didn't think uninstalling the management server was a good idea.

Check if you have the following registry. If so, please back it up first, then
delete for a test.

 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\UpgradeCodes\C96403E8AD6025B4F9E1FE9C574E34AE

Also, please uninstall MOM product and Operations Manager Agent manually to
check the result.

Upgrading System Center 2012 SP1 - Operations Manager to System Center 2012 R2
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249707.aspx<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3a%2f%2ftechnet.microsoft.com%2fen-us%2flibrary%2fdn249707.aspx&data=01%7c01%7cjopupill%40064d.mgd.microsoft.com%7c53258e9134cb4d935df408d383d1d445%7c72f988bf86f141af91ab2d7cd011db47%7c1&sdata=Fb1pRRAExoShlMB0ZdVFWQHCR8MtY2BL%2fLDYrDnrTF4%3d>

The registry entry they refer to does exist.
Once again, not sure if they're referring to the SP1 management server here.

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks
Gareth Miles
