My problem however is that I am not using challenge-response but certificates. So my server already authenticates msmtp during the STARTTLS handshake. It doesn't need any authentication afterwards. (And in fact doesn't even support it afterwards, hence my bugreport) In your case the STARTTLS handshake doesn't tell your server anything about the client so it still needs a password. But as the server doesn't tell msmtp this you get the error message.
