Google calls "access for less secure apps" allowing access to
POP3/IMAP/SMTP with the account password, which is the traditional way.
What they would prefer is that you use a client implementing the SASL
XOAUTH2 (which is google-specific, not a standard).
It is described at https://developers.google.com/gmail/xoauth2_protocol

Most clients are in the same situation, though.
