I often had segfaults with GCC and Insight when I was using Cygwin;
cygwin-built software seems to be very unstable in general. I think it
would be very useful if Steve could build GCC with mingw32.

I use WinXP most of the time, and the Cygwin stuff is rock solid there. On the other hand, quirky stuff with MinGW32 builds was a PITA. In general I find Mingw32 stuff just doesn't seem to behave properly. The fix I found to get gdb to handle the binaries produced by the Mingw32 builds of mspgcc was the result of hours of fiddling around. The directory names Mingw32 builds put in the libraries and executables don't follow the same rules as those from the Cygwin builds. Even Mingw32 builds of the the GNU tools cannot handle these directory names correctly.

If people have trouble, it seems I should address those problems, but I'm not exactly sure of the best course to take. My guess is that NT, 2000 and XP users are OK, and only 95, 98 and Me users have problems. I would welcome feedback that confirms or denies this.

Windows - a pane in the glass!

Segfaults with Insight are a separate issue, I think. This isn't the most stable software when it is running on Linux.

Steve
