I am using an XP machine and it's working pretty good (since about 2 months). I have more trouble (i.e. it hangs more often) with IE (that nobody can consider to be "non Windows" application :-) ) than i have with gcc/gdb/insight.
My humble advice is to leave W98 and use NT, XP o 2K (It is still Windows but it works).
