We've never had a problem with binutils. The snapshots they produce
weekly are so reliable we normally use those. If you want a version with
support for the latest devices try a snapshot. If you are using older
devices use a snapshot or the latest numbered release.
GCC changes much more. The 3.3.x series all seem to have issues for some
architectures. They produce bigger slower code for the MSP430. We
decided to abandon tuning and bug fixing for 3.3.x. 3.2.3 works very
well, and is actively supported. That is the preferred version. The
latest versions are also supported.
