Well, someone thought about the problem long enough to come up with a
brilliant solution. Talking about ancient building techniques. I visited
the Borobudur and Pram Banan temple complexes in Indonesia. Because of the
frequent earthquakes in that area, a stack of stones like a pyramid won't
last very long. So they build the temples like a 3D jig-saw puzzle (imagine
3D Tetris with really odd shapes).

How they designed it? No-one knows but appearantly every era has its own
unique problems and solutions.
