What you posted is necessary to fix the problem. It may not be sufficient.
You could run into some of the other problems I found while looking at it
yesterday, depending on how you're building things.
I suggest using the latest binutils from git if you really want to use
--gc-sections. And be wary; I hadn't used unique sections myself until
yesterday, and I'm not yet convinced the msp430 back-end does everything
that's necessary to enable them correctly.
