I checked out the tree on another machine, this time Ubuntu 11.04 (the
other is debian squeeze) and now it compiles!

This is all pretty clean.

Oh, what do you mean by that?
I build within the toplevel "binutils" directory, not in
"binutils/binutils/" of course.

Yes, of course.
But sometimes problems are common and have a common reason.
This one did not ;)
Hmm... I really wonder what the essential difference is between the two
machines.
