I did a simple search on google "running linux from usb", First page
http://www.pendrivelinux.com but there are many others.
You might check out LinuxMint. Looks like it has an option of running
from USB flash and saving the setting to the flash drive. LinuxMint can be
based on either Ubuntu or Debian. Not sure of the different
characteristics.
