James,

Thanks for the feedback. That's helpful to know. I'm assuming that all the
files in SMSPKG$ beyond just the .PCKs are necessary, including the delta
replication files, correct?

Cheers,

Distribution Point

We've never had the preloadpkgonsite.exe utility work on software update
packages or osd packages. It only worked on standard software packages.

Thanks,

James Massardo

Subject: [mssms] ConfigMgr 2007 SP2: Replace Secondary Site with
Distribution Point

Hey folks,

I'm replacing a ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 Secondary Site with a pure Distribution
Point role, on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 operating system. I would like
to ensure that I do not have to re-copy all the packages across the wire,
although it wouldn't be the end of the world if that did happen. The network
pipe to the remote site is fairly sizable.

Can anyone vet these directions, and see if I'm missing anything?

1. Record the Site Boundaries assigned to the Secondary Site

2. Remove the Site Boundaries from the Secondary Site

3. Add the Site Boundaries to the Primary Site

4. If you wish to re-use the Secondary Site as a Distribution Point,
make a backup of the .PCK files in the SMSPKG$ folder

5. Uninstall the site from the ConfigMgr console

a. Note: Avoid using the "Delete this site" option, as it will leave
the Secondary Site components installed on the Secondary Site server. It's
better to just do a fresh installation, if you're going to move the site.

6. Delete any Addresses pointing to the Secondary Site

7. Install the Distribution Point role

8. Run the preloadpkgonsite.exe tool for each .PCK file in the backed
up SMSPKG$ folder

9. Associate the Distribution Point with each appropriate Package
object in the Configuration Manager console

a. Note: This can be done via PowerShell script as well, to save time
and avoid human errors.

Thanks in advance for your review.

Trevor Sullivan
