Very small sample (my own PC), but I have upgraded Win7 to Win8 in place without an issue. So, it's possible the options for doing in place upgrades are getting better. For a large scale deployment, I would likely always do a USMT capture of data and a fresh OS install. That seems to just make sense. . . .
