Todd did some extensive work on this and what he did is being sold by Fyrsoft. 
It's pretty amazing stuff. UDI has a lot of quirks.

Has anyone ever deployed a system REFRESH (Win7 to Win7) or UPGRADE (XP to 
Win7) and have the Task Sequence search for previous applications and deploy
