They've been heading down this path for the last 5 years, and visualizing it
even longer than that. I remember sitting, chatting with Microsoft around
2003 where they were wanting to find a way to be the utility company for IT,
similar to how gas, water, and electric is sold and managed. The technology
just wasn't there back then. Now it is.

No, yes really.  It appears they think we only need to test for 180 days at

Not really, when you think about it.  TechNet was used more for downloading
software than any of the other benefits.  You can spin-up a Windows Azure VM
and test the same software now.  No reason to have it on-premise for
testing.  Plus, the other options they are offering as replacements are all
free.

 

They are keeping MSDN, though (for a while), so you can subscribe to that if
you want to download bits.
