Doing this, you may run into issues.

Certain versions of hardware will only work correctly with certain
versions of driver, and it may select the wrong one.

How many models do you support?

Subject: [mssms] Driver Packages Consolidation

Hello,

We are thinking in these lines to reduce the drivers/packages, thus the
total Image size on servers or ISO/USB etc. Appreciate to share your
comments/feedback on these lines

Reducing the # of driver packages (or drivers ) as much as possible to
make the content lighter on servers, USB etc. mediums and also to reduce
the conflict of drivers, if any. This might save Gigs on Images, though
careful consideration and testing needed

a. Lenovo's latest driver of certain hardware works fine on older
laptop models also, provided its same hardware, meaning if T530 has
latest driver for "Intel(R) HD Graphics" , same graphics card is also
part of T430, T500 laptops but currently used with its lowers versions,
then latest driver should be suffice to handle driver needs of all
models wherever this card is present. This reduces both the # of
packages/drivers to pass on benefits to us

b. Here is small illustration of drivers info of "Intel(R) HD
Graphics" which spans two packages

T 530 Package

T410-T510 Packages

Intel(R) HD Graphics

Class: Display

Ver: 8.15.10.2778 >

RelDate: 6/6/2012 >

Name: Intel(R) HD Graphics

Class: Display

Ver:8.15.10.2622

RelDat: 1/10/2012

PS: In short suggestion is to switch from current strategy of "A driver
package for each model like T530, T420 etc" to "A package for hardware
components like Display or Vendor like Intel sort of" where latest
versions of drivers are kept and old ones to removed. This helps to
achieve less/nil chances of duplicate drivers hence reduced size of
drivers in the OSD
