Exactly. With that number it is hard to manage manually. For at least everything in AD we're fine.

If you're networking teams do their job, document their vlans, and submit proper change records, then it's a trivial task to maintain the boundaries. If you don't have visibility into those types of changes, that's really a process problem that hatred for a specific technology won't fix. We manage a lot of workgroup systems and systems in untrusted forests so AD-sites don't work for us. We even have a couple of sites that don't have boundaries at all because stuff changes so much in those environments that no one can keep up with all of them. It's not hard to get the right network numbers, ConfigMgr even has a built-in report that will give you a list of them.
