We've used buffalo nas devices for 200 plus sites running windows storage server 2008. This is for configmgr 2012. We provision in deployment room, protect boundary and configuring schedule on package changes after they get shipped. Works great too. Will send you more details on specific model as well. Customer is a perfect fit for Adaptiva or 1E solution but does not want to have 3rd party involvement. They were thinking adding portable USB 3.0 drives to remote locations but don't want to have to add servers to those locations. I'd just like to see what others are doing (outside of Adaptiva or 1E).
