The DoubleTree Galleria and the DoubleTree Downtown (12 blocks) are two separate locations.

You're looking at an approximate $25 cab ride from the Galleria area to the Convention Center.

There's a map on the TechEd site and the distance is listed for all the hotels when selecting the hotel during registration. I think the DoubleTree was the second closest hotel with rooms available.

The Galleria is a pretty good distance from the Convention Center. You're looking at a cab ride.

Most of the hotels within blocks are full. I found only two that
were not. $500.00 per night was the rate for the one connected to
    the convention center.

See the conference hotel rates on the TechEd website:

    http://northamerica.msteched.com/Hotels

These are going to be much better than the hotel's listed rates,
since the convention will suck up a good percentage of downtown
Houston's (and probably farther out as well) hotel rooms.

    Thanks,
