You can definitely learn more from the vast number of speakers at TechEd than
you can pick up from 1 Consultant. How many deployments of CM12 has this guy
done? How many of those has he managed day in and day out for the past couple
of years? Day to day admins run into things that don't pop up until months
after the consultant has left the building.

Plus the content there is broader than just CM so you can learn about other
technologies too.

Subject: [mssms] Help needed convincing the boss to get me to TechEd!

I really want to attend TechEd, but our CIO may not approve it. We have a
consultant coming in March to help us spin up a new CM2012 instance that will
cover the entire campus. During his engagement, he will be transferring
knowledge to me, which our CIO sees as sufficient training, therefore he
doesn't see any reason why I should be going to TechEd.

I already have been working with CM2012 for some time now, so the daily ins and
outs of its operation are not an issue for me. But I loved the MMS conferences
I attended and got so much out of them.

So, can you folks help me convince my CIO that even with this consultant coming
in, TechEd would still be well worth the money?
