Yes, the update automatically trigger an update of all site systems components. 
You can monitor this in the log folder on the site system

We have a single primary SCCM 2012 server, as well as two additional site 
system servers that run MP's, DP's, and SMP's.  A couple months back we 
upgraded the site from SP1 to R2 and today from R2 to CU1.  When this takes 
place, does this automatically update the components on the site system 
servers?  I know the updates create a server package but I am unclear as to 
whether this is just for primaries and secondaries or if it also needs to be 
applied to site system servers.  Any help is appreciated, thanks!
