I've always done it with reg hacks, but there is a quick way to check.
Remove the reg hack on your machine and then go into the control panel and
disable the plugin (if it's already disabled, enable it and then apply,
then disable).  Now, go to

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Sun\Java\Deployment (I got that path from
memory, so I think it's right)

There, open Deployment.Properties and look to see if there is a next gen
disable line. If not, they probably just disabled it in the registry.

I don't see next gen listed, but it's Java so that doesn't mean you can't.
