I think there are no official MS Docs about this. Did you check the TechNet already? Here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx#BKMK_SupConfigClientNumbers In the Clients per Site Section is a difference with SQL on the Primary Site server and having SQL Remote. But I think that's not what you were looking for.
