What version of VMWare are you using? If you have the option of Windows 7 for the guest OS then you should be good. The key hardware is the NIC, which if you select Win7 as the guest OS VMWare will use a standard Intel NIC (a default driver included with Windows).
You can get by without the VMWare Tools. It will work. You won't have the integration services but it'll work. There's no harm in adding an install of the tools. But it all depends on what you're looking to accomplish. If you're using VMs for basic build testing then (in my opinion) don't worry about integrating the VMWare Tools. On the other hand, if you're building production VMs perhaps in ESX then I would add the tools and install it as an application. What drivers are you currently trying to install when it blows up?
