We have all of our servers using maintenance windows and automatically
installing updates and rebooting themselves weekly (if there’s anything to do),
our deployments are required and deadline immediately, so the maintenance
windows stop them from doing anything until then. Our deployments are also set
to show everything in the software center so if an admin logs on to their
server at some point before their server’s maintenance window, they’re free to
install anything they want any time they want and reboot it too, they are,
after all, the admin of the server. But I have to keep up with compliance so
if they don’t log in and do it themselves, sccm will do it during the defined
and agreed upon by everybody maintenance window.

And adam is correct you can control the reboot behavior inside/outside a MW or
not.

We also have the same SUG’s deployed as available updates for individual use
servers or servers without maintenance windows, like vm’s on desktops and stuff
like that, so those folks can control that/ignore that as long as they want. I
don’t have to keep track of compliance for those devices, so it’s much more
like wsus or Microsoft update at that point, just delivered through SCCM.
ADR’s put updates into SUGs every month and the deployments update with the new
updates, and then show up in the software center.

You can also specify, I believe within the deployment, to Never Restart Clients
or Servers.

maintenance windows do not apply AT ALL if the user initiates it. no affect

Good afternoon,

I have a collection that contains PROD servers which have a weekly MW schedule
every Sat. I setup a Software Updates Deployment to this collection with the
following settings:

Type of Deployment: Available

Software Available time: Specific Time: 2AM

Installation Deadline: As soon as possible (this is default)

User Experience - both Deadline behavior and Device Restart behavior is greyed
out.

My requirement is to be able to have app owners manually download/install
updates. But, I also need to make sure that SCCM isn't forcing a reboot. A
two-part question. 1) If Updates are in Software Center and the user
downloads/installs will SCCM force a reboot? OR 2) will it wait for the next MW
to reboot? I'm trying to better understand the behavior.

Thanks,

Brian
