Did you enabled Named Pipes on the SQL server? Is there a firewall turn on the SQL box? Turn off if it is and run prereq again see what happens.
Just some thoughts ☺ Also, the recommended install is to install SQL on the same box and everyone on the list would agree. There may be business reasons as to why you can’t so you may not be able to. I had my previous SCCM environment on a remote SQL and it was a pain to install and manage. I moved to same box during my latest upgrade to 1606 and it works so much better.
